Thomas F. COPELAND
I am Fred Copeland of Rock Hill, SC. My gr-gr-gr-grandfather, Ripley COPELAND of Chatham County, NC, resided in Chesterfield County for a while, before eventually moving to Sumter
District, SC. His brother Aaron COPELAND settled in Chesterfield County.
I am trying to help an elderly cousin, Tom Copeland, find his ancestors in Chesterfield County,
SC. We know that his gr-grandfather, Thomas F. COPELAND, was in Chesterfield County for
the 1860 Federal Census, age 32. And we know shortly after that census he traveled to Tennessee,
and eventually up the Ohio River where he, his wife (Sarah Ellen WHITE also thought to be from Chesterfield County) and two of their children died on a riverboat near Louisville, KY in the mid-
1860's of "pestulence."
We also know that Tom and I are cousins through DNA testing (all 25 marker match).
What we don't know is . . . Did Thomas F. own land in Chesterfield, County (we can find no
record)? Was he Aaron COPELAND's grandson? I did find a Joseph COPELAND in Chesterfield
County and think this is Aaron COPELAND's son but could never find any children listing him as
the father.

The reason I suggest Joseph may be Thomas F.'s father's name is he named his first child Joseph.

Thomas F. COPELAND
I have a photocopy of a legal notice found in the Cheraw Gazette May 29, 1840 which states Moses
and Thomas COPELAND and several others were "children of Aaron COPELAND, late of Chesterfield District."
Where /how can I get a copy of the lega notice above?
