| Susan Brown - 04/24/2005 HORTON Thomas Andrew HORTON My grandfather was the mayor of McBee, South Carolina. I am not sure where his twin brothers, Sid and Charles are buried. Does anyone have a digital picture of the cemetery in McBee that I could upload to www.findagrave.com for his obituary page or would be willing to take a digital of his marker for me and my grandmother, Mary Susan GARDNER HORTON? I am in Baton Rouge, LA and don't come to McBee very oftern so it is difficult for me to get the photographs. Thank you for you time. Susan Brown ssusanb@cox.net This is in my Grandmother, Mary Susan GARDNER NORTON's Bible. She is the mother to J. Howard HORTON. My grandmother's handwriting is not very clear so some of the names may not make sense. I saw an obituary in the Cheraw newspaper for a TILLER from McBee who had just passed away, one of the soldiers listed below is a TILLER. I wondered if they were kin to each other. Names of Soldiers in Company A, 7th SC Battalion, Haygood's Bridgade All of the Gardners were kin to my grandmother, who was originally from Tiller's Ferry, SC and was born in 1868. She married a HORTON and lived in McBee. SC. I have tried to share this information with someone at one of the Universities there but no one wants it. I will copy the sheet and mail it to you if anyone is interested in this information. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Bruce Williams - 07/14/2005 Annie M. HORTON married G. M. Hendrix iin Cheraw, ca 1878 Annie M. HORTON was born Nov. 1854 in North Carolina, to "A.B." HORTON and his wife, "M. A." I believer that A. B. HORTON was "Archibald B. HORTON, who married Mary A. M. YOUNG on 3 Jan. 1848, Franklin County, N.C." They appeared two years after their 1848 marriage on the 1850 census for Cumberland County, Eastern Division, N.C. as "Archibald B. HORTON, aged 25 and Mary A. HORTON, aged 25". Their family appeared on the 1860 census at Summerville Post Office region, Harnett County, N.C. as "A. B. HORTON, 36, "M. A." HORTON (wife) aged 38, with two children "A. M." HORTON, aged 6 (this is Annie M.) and "A. B." HORTON, son, aged 4 (assume Archibald B., Jr.) all in Cheraw, Chesterfield County, S.C., still (irritatingly) listing them and their children by initials only. On the 1880 Cheraw census as "A. B. and M. A. HORTON", they live next door to thier son-in-law, G. M. HENDRIX, (another initial-only fellow) who was a railroad conductor, and his new wife, Annie M. (HORTON) HENDRIX. G. M. and Annie had among other children, Lilly "Lyl" M. HENDRIX, born Jan. 1887 Cheraw, who married ca. 1910 John Huntly WELLS (1882-1916) of Cheraw. A later census says G. M. and Annie were marreid ca. 1878, and give G. M. HENDRIX as born N.C. July, 1836. By the 1900 Cheraw Census, A. B. HORTON is a widower, and his son-in-law G. M. HENDRIX and daughter, Annie M. (HORTON) HENDRIX are living with him, as are their children. G. M. HENDRIX is still living in Cheraw on 1910 census, but by 1920 his wife, Annie M. is listed as a widow. G. M. does not appear on the S.C. death index (started in 1915), so probably died after the 1910 census and prior to beginning of S.C. death index in 1915. Annie M. (HORTON) HENDRIX died in Chesterfield County, SC on 24 Mar. 1946 (per death index), and she is enumerated on the 1920 and 1930 censuses for Cheraw. On the 1930 census, she was living (as ":mother-in-law") in the household of her son-in-law, Rodrick(?) M. I. WATTS and his wife/her daughter Adair (?) <sorry for trouble with the correct census reading>. I amwondering in anything is known about G. M. HENDRIX genealogically, and if there is a cemetery project in Chesterfield County, SC that would provide tombstone inscriptions, probably all in Cheraw, for: 1) G. M. HENDRIX, died ca. 1910-1920. 2) "A. B." (or Archibald B.) HORTON, died after 1900 census and prior to 1910 census. 3) "M. A." (or Mary A.) HORTON, died between 1880 census and 1900 census. 4) Annie M. (HORTON) HENDRIX, who died Chesterfield County, SC 24 Mar. 1946 (soc. sec. death index). Appreicate any help, and hope the above will be of assistance to local researchers. Thank you... Bruce Williams b.cw@comcast.net |
