The original First Baptist Church on the corner of Market and Greene Streets was constructed in 1840. Unitl that time the members had been meeting in a building on the river hill. In 1928, members decided to tear this wooden structure and build a new brick structure. Because of the Depression, the new building, which stands today, wasn't completed until 1938.
