Elizabeth Ann Gaddy Rivers: This structure wa built by Jim Burch. He had been in business at a store and station with Bryan Lisenby across the street, but decided to go in business for himself. He sold groceries, and I never knew it as anything but "Jim Burch's Store." There have been many types of businesses in this building over the years. I believe that Jim sold the building to Fred Bailey, and that he in turn might have sold it to John Freeman. Eventually it was sold to Wilbert Welsh, who was running the store across the street where Jim and Bryan had been. Wilbert had a number of renters over the years. One was Buck Gulledge, who opened Buck's Upholstery Shop here. Following him was Everette Demby who opened Demby's Washerette here. The buildng later housed at least three restaurants, all with the same name of Freez King. The first Freez King was opened by Cliff Brumett, who came here from Hartsville. Johnny A. Davis opened the next restaurant, retaining the name. The current Freez King is owned by Lewis Johns who bought the building from Wilbert Welsh's estate. The current Freez King primarily serves fried chicken. |
