Remembering Old Times
Susanne Branch McCaskill: I think the house was built around 1931-32. Earlier views of the house are shown in photos two and three. The house was remodeled to have a sun room and a patio out back. The original house had maid quarters on the top floor. The remodeled home had four bedrooms. Jack and I both graduated from high school while living here. Jack was in the class of 1950, and I was in the class of 1953. We found a piece of molding in the attic of a storage building out back of the house, and we had it copied and milled identical molding for use in our home. So a little piece of Chesterfield has made it to Montreat. I think my parents bought the house from Mildred and Son Welsh, but I don't know how the Welshes came into possession of the house. The main house was added on to while I was in high school. Jack and I built the brick wall out front. We strung string as any good mason would and went from there. I mixed the mortar in a wheelbarrow, and we worked on the wall together. Mother had a landscape person from Florence do the yard.
Elizabeth Ann Gaddy Rivers: Buck Branch married Margaret Duvall from Cheraw. Buck's hardware was in the building Savannah's occupies today. My aunt, Audrey Teal Adams, worked for him before she was married. This residence recently became the home of James and Marla Jacobs Hamilton.
James W. Jenkins: Susanne and Bill McCaskill are neighbors of Dr. Billy and Ruth Graham in Montreat, NC. Charles Merwin (Jack) Branch lives in Houston, Texas.
