Katherine Ward Rivers Braswell: In the 30’s my father ran a filling station at this location. One Sunday while we were in Bethune visiting my grandmother, the building burned. For a long time we had the silver from the nickles that had melted in the fire. I think it was after this that my father and Ted Pusser built the Shell Station on the corner of Main and South Page Street
Clyde Nicky Watson: Pete Thornell owned an oil company out of Florence and he had a number of Super X Stations in the area. In addition to Buck Watson, I recall Robert (Sonny) Burr and Fred (Big Boy) White, Jr. operated the station James W. Jenkins: Mayo Rivers ran the Super - X Station at this site. He was followed by Buck Watson as the operator of the Super – X Station. The station was a small wooden building and a grease pit to the left of the building. I recall only one gas pump. This was the site of intense “horse shoe” games behind the store. Regular horse shoes (not the official size in use today) were used and the landing pits were well worn. I learned several new words at this site that I couldn’t use at school. Boys were allowed to play with the men, but to stay in the contest, you had to win—the losers sat down. I did a great deal more watching than playing. Charles D. Rivers: I recall when my father ran the Super X station before Buck Watson, Mr. Hearn would come to have his automobile serviced. He would not allow anyone to drive the vehicle on to the grease pit. He reserved that responsibility for himself. Dr. William Perry: The FCX started at this location. |
