Lucy and Gladys Rayfield House
Bryan Lisenby House
Jackie Pittman House
  Pat Lisenby Pittman (2003):
I have many wonderful memories of this house. To name a few: I enjoyed playing in the big barn that is behind the house, jumping on the “joggling board” on the porch, playing “hide and seek” with my Dad when he would come home around 9 or 10 o’clock each night from his store across the street, Lisenby Red and White. Waiting for my Dad to come across the street with a watermelon on his shoulder on hot sunny days, fish fries in the back yard, and gifts from “Santa Claus” in the chairs in the living room (each child had a special chair) are still wonderful memories today. I can recall the wonderful meals we had at the dining room table, and the many dates with my future husband, Jackie, when we would spend the evening listening to the music of the 50’s and 60’s. I was born in the front room that is now the dining room. Dr. Walter Wiley would sleep on the couch until time for the baby to be delivered. He had his nurse, Miss Glenn, by his side. Mrs. Pauline Ratliff would come and spend two weeks with the new baby and mother because she was not allowed out of bed for at least a week. When our son, Mike, was born, Mrs. Pauline came to stay with me. This was one of her last times helping new-borns and mothers. My brother, Larry, was born in what is now my son’s bedroom. My father was standing beside the bed, along with Dr. Wiley and Miss Glenn. He was so excited to have a boy at last. My older sister, Joyce, was around three when the family moved here. My mother found out that she was expecting me soon after they bought the house. There were fireplaces in every room and much work had to be done to prepare the house for our family. They enclosed the stairway to conserve heat from the stand-alone furnace that was put in the hallway. At one time the upstairs was rented to other families. Jackie and I moved back into the house in September, 2002, after my mother’s death. We cherish our happy memories here and we are making new memories each day.

Pamela Sue Rayfield WoodThis home was built (probably late 1930’s) by Lucy Rayfield and Gladys Rayfield, who were teachers. The sisters were not married and their parents, Kate and Levi Rayfield lived in the home with them. Levi died while living in the home. Gladys and Lucy married late in life and moved to Lancaster County. Kate, their mother, moved with Gladys and her new husband and they lived in Heath Springs. Abner Davis rented the home from the Rayfield’s until they built their home on west main street. Bryan and Corrine Lisenby bought the home around 1945 and lived their until both passed away. I recall a “Joggling Board” on the front porch as my favorite part of the house.
