James W. Jenkins: Mrs. Annie Edwards was the first single, black woman, homeowner I can recall. Mrs. Edwards, on occasion, would help my mother with domestic chores and she did ironing for us. I delivered the paper to her house when I was in high school. My sisters told me that when they went to Mrs. Edwards house they had to take their shoes off to keep from getting her house dirty. |
