James W. Jenkins: Our family is indebted to Dr. Wiley for the care and attention he showed us when my younger brother was born and later died at Duke University Hospital. Dr. Wiley made arrangements for Billy to be admitted to the hospital, used his own vehicle to transport the baby to the hospital, and then found a room nearby where my mother could stay and visit the hospital daily. The first encounter with Dr. Wiley that I recall was when he removed my tonsils when I was in the third grade. Barbara Watson Eddins reports that tonsils were removed while the patient sat in a leather lounge chair. He also circumcised me on that same visit, but I don’t recall what device I sat on for that procedure. Maybe Dr. Wiley had a two-for-one operation special that week. I do recall two things that followed; I couldn’t climb any trees, and I got ice cream as a reward. When I returned to Chesterfield to coach in the early 60’s, Dr. Wiley had a Corvette that he loaned Marion, my first wife who died in 1972, for the Cheerleaders to use in the home coming parade. I also recall reading that Dr. Wiley had an airplane that he flew over Chesterfield when WWII ended. Dr. Wiley’s office was located upstairs on Main Street over the grocery Store before moving to this location.
Shirley Parker Campbell: This building has served many purposes over the years. When Dr. Walter Wiley moved from his Main Street location, he relocated to this site. I know that Laura Burch Hunt lived here at one time and Bill and Sadie Clark lived here at one time. Charles D. Rivers: I recall that on one occasion when Dommy Burch was injuried in a ball game, we brought him home after the game. He was living here at that time. |
