Dr. William Perry: The T. R. Evans home on Teal's Mill Road was built around 1910. Mr. Evans manufactured brick for about twenty years. The pit where the clay was mined is still visible today. I recall making a house call at this location for a Mrs. Eva Crawford. The interior of the house was brick and the mortar between the brick had been pushed out so far that the the interior of the house did not have a smooth surface. It was some time later that bolts were drilled into the walls to hold the framing and the the interior walls were finished. John Robert Rivers lived here at one time. As a result of our taking care of Mrs. Eva Crawford, The Perry Clinic received a portion of land from the estate. The Cemetery and the Crawford Family had deeded much of this property to the Episcopal Church in Cheraw. We conveyed to the church the portion of the land we received from the estate. The story is told that Colonel Spencer was a Revolutionary Veteran and he received 10,000 acres along what is today Highway 9 but was called Calhoun Highway then, and he was entitled to buy 10,000 acres on both sides of the granted property. Another story says that President John Quincy Adams has a niece buried in the cemetery. Cemeteries that are laid out properly will have the head of the deceased facing west and the feet facing east. This is based on the premise that when one rises to meet his maker, he will be facing the rising sun (Son) from the east.
