Taylor Hatchery Clyde Ballard House Owen Poston House Site Grits and Groceries (2006) |
James W. Jenkins: In the 40's this site had a small white house that faced Craig Street. At the back of that house and running parallel to the by-pass was a long wooden building that housed a hatchery. I recall that Owen Poston lived in the house and Clyde Ballard lived there before they built on Highway 9 east of town. Owen worked at Belk's Department Store. Clyde was seriously injured in a electrical accident where he lost a leg and a portion of the back of his skull. It was amazing that he survived such an accident. Clyde, Plume Rivers, Glenn Rivers and I had many pleasant trips to basketball games over the years. Shirley Parker Campbell: Sarah Farmer bought the house that was on this corner for her sister Carrie Ballard. Clyde and Carrie lived here for a number of years. My family was renting the house from Sarah Farmer when Owen Poston bought the house. I recall the hatchery that was in the rear of the building and it seem that the name on the roof of the building was Taylor, but I can't be certain of that. |
