George Kershaw Laney
Dr. William Perry: I never heard the term Austin-Craig house. That has come on the scene in recent years. I always knew the house as “The George Laney House.” Mr. George Laney was not a native of Chesterfield, but he came here and married a Tiller woman, who was related to the Britton family. Mrs. Laney lived there until her death. Tom and Dot Branch Tiller lived there at one time. The Tracy Dotsons live there today.

Katherine Ward Rivers Braswell: Mrs. Louise Tiller Laney’s mother was a Chapman before she married. Her brother, a doctor in Johnsonville, was the father of Steve Chapman. After Steve finished college at USC and had his law degree, he came to Chesterfield to start his law practice, and he lived with his Aunt Louise and Mr. George Laney. Mrs. Louise Laney had a brother, Mr. Will Tiller, who was married to Laura McRae, sister of Flora McRae Rivers and aunt of Delle Ratcliff Rivers. Laura was the mother of Thomas Lucas Tiller and Sara Tiller Bird (Tom and Sara were twins). They lived in a house that was located between the present day Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home and the Charlie and Delle Rivers Home. Laura Tiller died while the twins were young, and Mr. Tiller married Miss Stella Mims, who worked as the Clemson Home Agent. I think Mr. Will might have been the Clemson Extension Agent at that time. “Miss” Stella and Mr. Will had one son, William Mims Tiller. The family was active in the Baptist Church. “Miss” Stella was president of the WMU for a number of years. “Miss” Louise and Mr. George Laney had one son who fell from the upstairs and was killed when he was quite young. At some point in time, “Miss” Louise’s sister, Mamie Tiller Britton, and her family came to live with the Laneys. I don’t know what happened to Mr. Britton (he must have been dead), but he and Mamie had four children: C. S. Britton, Lam Britton, Bernecia Britton, and Alise Britton. I think “Miss” Mamie ran the telephone switchboard at one time.
