Ralph Sellers
James W. Jenkins: This is the location of the Hardy J. and Ruth Davis Sellers house and store. They had three children (Vivian, Jack, and Ralph [3-30-1935 to 11-13-2007]. Vivan was a couple of years ahead of me in school, but I recall her very well. Jack was a year ahead of me in school, and while Ralph graduated the year after I did, we were near the same age. I have vivid memories of my experiences with Jack and Ralph. I recall a number of vehicles and motorcycles they had over the years. Frequently they were the only ones with constant transportation in our age group. I recall a Model T with no top that had pedals for gears. One evening we "lit out" (the younger generation won't know what that meant) for Cheraw with the car full. I can't recall all who accompained us that evening but I know that Jack, Ralph, Pete Burr, myself, and a couple others were in the group. The vehicle was well overloaded and we arrived in Cheraw after dark. We turned down by the railroad tracks (at that time there were no crossing arms or flashing lights) and before we realized it, we noticed a train moving along the track, Ralph was driving and he made a hard right and the left tires of the T Model was bumping up and down over the railroad ties in the oposite direction from the train. We figured the police might have been alerted and we returned home by several dirt roads away from expected traffic. That was probably a wise idea since we had no lights either. But the excitement wasn't over for that evening. On the way home, we got stuck in sand and had to get out and push the vehicle up the hill. On one of those occasions, the T Model lurched backward when we expected it to go forward and Pete Burr was knocked down and the car may have run over him, we couldn't tell from laughing so hard. We eventually arrived at Chesterfield and there is no telling what happened before Jack and Ralph got home with the T Model. Another memory was a later vehicle, an A Model, that had a bent tire rod and would not turn to the left so we had to plan our trips with the thought in mind that we might have to make four turns to accomplish our destination. There may have been a couple of Indian brand motorcyles along the transportation continum that we traversed in our teen years. Every experience I can remember with the Sellers boys was always an adventure. We spent many exciting summer days at Cheraw State Park, and many exciting nights at "The Hut" with stops along the way at Wayside Grill, Cabin Creek, and Chat and Chew. We were team mates on the high school sports teams as well. My memory is flooded with these happy times as we mourn the loss of our dear friend, Ralph Sellers.
Vivian Sellers married Jack Horne (now deceased) from the Thompson Creek community. Jack Married Katie Boykin from McColl, SC., and Ralph married Sara Kate Rivers from Chesterfield.
