Hough House

Amelia Hough: Growing up in a small town had its advantages. Life was simple and moved at a slow and leisurely pace. There was no rush hour traffic nor a parking problem downtown. You could go the the local theater to see movies, such as, Gone With the Wind and King Kong, for 26 cents. You rarely locked your doors except at night, and you could sleep with the windows open. You knew everyone in town, and they were Baptist, Methodist, or Presbyterians. The milkman delivered bottled milk to your front door, and the doctors made house calls. I knew the simple joys of watching Buffalo Bod and Howdy Doody on a black and white TV, reading Alice and Jerry books in school, catching lightning bugs in a jar on a warm summer night, tying a thread on a June Bug's leg and letting it fly, doodling for Doodle Bugs in the sand, building toad houses by packing moist dirt on your foot, being allowed to finally go barefoot on the last day of schoo, having a coke float with friends at the local drug store, building a rugged clubhouse with "No Boys Allowed", and fishing with Dad from the bank of a pond.
