James W. Jenkins: The Chesterfield School was completed in 1908, with additions to the building in 1918 and 1923. It housed grades one through eleven until 1948, when the 12th grade was added. The building was discontinued as a school in 1975. The building burned November 18, 1992.

The gymnasium and cafeteria served Chesterfield shools for a number of years. The gym was completed in (1934 by the corner stone, or 1939 according to newspaper accounts) by the Works Progress Administration, which was a labor force organized by the government to provide employment for people following the depression of the late 20’s and early 30’s. The walls of the building are approximately eighteen inches thick.

It is reported by Walter Burr, Jr. that students helped unload the rocks used in the construction of the building.

The Chesterfield County Recreation Department was housed in the facility until it burned April 22, 2004.

James W. Jenkins: Do you remember these former administrators?
Who played on the boys basketball team back then?
Band was quite popular then.
Chesterfield has always been a baseball town. Check out the 1963 State Champions.
Our cheerleaders were always the best.
If you could sing, you were in the chorus. I couldn't sing and I was in it. Numbers must have counted for something.
Do you recall who was in your graduating classes?
Several Clubs were active; were you a member of any of these?
You might enjoy seeing some photographs of former coaches.
I recall a number of these faculty members do you?
Football seemed to run in cycles. The talent level varied from class to class.
Now girls basketball was always a stong point at CHS. A 1960-61 State Champion Trophy proves that.
Horse Shows retained their popularity for many years. It was always a wonderful social occasion.
Can you find an old school friend here?
There is an old saying that the army moves on its belly. Support Staff who provide school lunches are just as important.
You might find it interesting to view the list of graduates from 1933 to 1968 (classes 41 and 42 not available). We are indebted to Margie Gaskins for keeping these records over the years.
When you click on the folder, it may take a minute for the classes to load since there are several. You can probaly open and read them from the web, but if you wanted to print a copy, you probably need to select the class, save it to your computer, and if you have a spread sheet program, you probably can print it.

A School Directory from 1940 to 2000 is available for you to peruse. It loads slowly because it is a large file. You will have to use both vertical and horizontal scroll bars to view the entire page.
