Chesterfield Colored School Principal And Faculty
  Elizabeth Ann Gaddy Rivers: Thelma Rivers, who volunteers at the Chesterfield Visitor Center, provided this photo from her scrapbook. The school in the background is the Chesterfield Colored School, which burned in the 1950's. It was located at what is today the corner of Mill Street and Toatley Road. The photo shows faculty members at the school, along with the principal, William Franklin (W. F.) Hickson, who is standing in the back row. His wife, Nina Hickson, is seated in the front row at the far right. (Names shown on the back row of the photo include: L to R: Jones, Saxon, Hickson, Prince, and Rivers)

James W. Jenkins: The Chesterfield Colored School was located on Toatley Drive off of Mill Street. When the school burned, the students attended School at the site of the former County Home were Edwards Elementary is located. When Zoar High School closed in the early 50's that school was renamed Gary High and the colored students attended school there.
