Lower Macedonia Baptist Church Wanda C. Dixon, Historian Lower Macedonia Baptist Church was organized in 1840 with twenty-five charter members. The name “Macedonia” comes from Paul’s message to the Macedonians. The first church was built of logs and it was burned during the Civil War. The second building was constructed in 1870 after joining the Welsh Neck Baptist Association in 1869 as “Macedonia Baptist Church.” In 1896 the church joined the Chesterfield Baptist Association as “Lower Macedonia Baptist Church.” In 1910 a new church was built and the wood for the church was donated by J. B. C. Hunt. The cost of the building was $1500. The first recorded Sunday School Superintendent was J. C. Evans. Wade Turnage served 47 years as a Sunday school teacher. Since 1869 we have had a total of 26 pastors, some who served on more than one occasion. In 1908 the Woman’s Missionary Union was started. Sunday school rooms were added to the rear of the building in 1930. The Men’s Brotherhood was started in 1955, the Girl’s Auxiliary began in 1968, and the Royal Ambassadors was formed in 1970. In 1970 the church purchased five and a quarter acres of land and formed the “Lower Macedonia Memorial Gardens.” A deacon training program was started in 1971. New Sunday school rooms were added in 1973 on the right side of the building. In 1979 the church debt was paid in full. In 1989 the church purchased 79 acres around the church for future growth. In 1991 a lighted road sign was purchased and installed. In 1995 the church purchased a 22 passenger bus. The Lower Macedonia Family Life Building was constructed over a two-year period from 1996 to 1998, and in 1998 a lighted scoreboard was installed. A college fund was established in 1998 and that was the year of our record attendance (232) for Vacation Bible School. In August of 1998 a day care program was started. The family live center was paid off in 2000. We have ordained and licensed several pastors and deacons over the years. God continues to bless our church as it grows.
