White Oak Presbyterian Church (last photo below), 6 miles south of Ruby, is the oldest Presbyterian church in Chesterfield County. It was established in 1812 and was originally known as the Rural Chesterfield Church. In 1829, the name was changed to Pisgah Presbyterian Church, and later to White Oak Presbyterian Church. The original building, though moved, still stands in good repair. Cotton bales shown in the front of the church were tithes from members of the congregation.

John Calvin and John Knox are considered the founders of the Presbyterian Church. Rev. Colin McIver, Rev. David Smith, Rev. John D. McFarland, and Elder Edward Clark are considered the founders of White Oak Presbyterian Church.

James W. Jenkins: If you have any interest in the history of White Oak Presbyterian Church, or of the establishment of the Presbyterian Church in America, or a brief review of the Reformation movement, then you need to get a copy of "White Oak Presbyterian" Chesterfield County, South Carolina (1812 - 2005) by Elder Atha Lou Gibson and Rev. John H. Jackson (Second Edition 2005) The cost is $25.00 plus shipping. I urge you to consider purchasing your own copy. I did, and I was so fascinated by it that I did not put it down until I had read the entire volume. Locally you may contact Peg Griggs to obtain a copy, or you may order from Rev. John H. Jackson 325 Lake Seminary Circle Maitland, Florida 32751.
