John Shoemake
of
Jackson County, Alabama

The Following Report Was Submitted To Me By Ms. Myra V. Gormley, And The Notations Are Strictly Mine:

I Do Not Have Any Documentation That This Report Is True And Correct Decendants of John Shoemake of Jackson County, Alabama This information has been researched and supplied by: Myra V. Gormley, I cannot vouch for the correctness of this report. Descendants of John "BallJack" Shoemake For some reason it appears that this John Shoemake, (believed to be the son of John Shoemake, according to this writer, who died in Chesterfield County, S.C. in 1784) was given the name "BallJack" Shoemake. (Notation by H.D. Shuemake) For a different story on John, Click Here

I do not want to take anything away from Mrs. Gormley's research, however, I have an interesting bit of obversation that I would like to inject at the point. It regards the John Shoemake who has been referred to "BallJack" Shoemake.

When viewing the census for John, both for 1830 and 1850, I notice a 20 year difference in his wife's age. In 1830, his wife was between 50 and 60 years of age. In 1850 his wife was listed as 66. This could only mean one thing. The wife he had in 1830 is not the same wife he had in 1850. This could explain how John A. Shoemake could have been the son of his wife and not his own biological son. Other words John A. was his stepson.

John Shoemake, age 84, (1850 Census of Jackson County, Alabama) Mulatto, Born in SC., Married to Ann, age 66, Mulatto, Born in SC. Living next to him was Jack A. Shoemake, age 47, Born in SC. He is not listed as a Mulatto. His family is listed as: Elizabeth, wife, age 42; Elizabeth, daughter, age 21, Born in TN.; George, son, or grandson, age 4, Born in Alabama.
(This is my research and my notes, H. D. Shuemake)

The following has been presented from Mrs. Gormley's Research

Generation No. 1

1. John "BallJack"1 Shoemake was born Abt. 1766 in Craven County, South Carolina, and died November 2, 1852 in Crow Town, Jackson County, Alabama.. The sons of John that were shown in the 1800 census of SC apparently settled in Tennessee. (See Tennessee Records of Shoemakes)

He married (1) Cah-tah-la-tah [-?-] Bef. 1800 in Cherokee Nation, Alabama. He married (2) Annie Thorn (Bone) ? Abt. 1802 in Alabama ?, probably the daughter of Daniel Thorn and Caty ParchCorn.

Notation by H.D. Shuemake:
There seems to be a discrepancy regarding the preceeding dates and locations when compared to other records. Also, the 1850 Census of Jackson County Alabama lists a Jack A. Shoemake which has been reported by others as John A. It is my opion that this person that is called John "Ball Jack" was not the John Shoemake listed my Myra V. Gormley, but rather the reported step-son of John Shoemake, who was listed as being born abt. 1766 in Craven County, SC.

According to the Federal Census, John was in South Carolina when the 1800 census were taken. Also other records show that John was married to an Annie Bone, not Annie Thorn. I have injected Bone in the following information. The 1810 census records of Chesterfield County, S.C. show there was a Daniel Bone living near Samuel and John Shoemake. See Census.

Notation:
A David Shoemake is listed in the Execution Docket, Bledsoe County Tennessee Circuit Court, (1810-1824), for the Spring Term of court, 1813.

A John Shoemake, in September, 1813, also was listed in the Bledsoe County Circuit Court Clerks Office, Execution Docket 1810-1824. This John died and his estate was being administrated. See Document (I suspect that this John was a brother to David, or a cousin)

At this point in time, I would guess that they were apparently the sons of Samuel.

Mrs. Gormley's information continued....

(The following note has been made by the writer, H. D. Shuemake, August 1999) The information supplied to me by Ms. Myra V. Gormley presents only one line of the decendants of John Shoemake (age 84) in 1850 Federal Census of Jackson County, Alabama. This appears to be that of John A. Shoemake. (It is my opinion, and mine alone, that other decendants of John included John Fletcher who settled in Marion County, Tennessee near Jasper).

The information of Ms. Gormley has been used for the sole purpose to help the reader identify the decendants of John A. Shoemake. It has been reported that John A. was a step child of John Sr., (Age 84) in 1850. If this is the case, then there is a possibility that the decendants of John A. were not really of the Shoemake line that came from Virginia in the 1700s and settled in the Chesterfield County area of South Carolina.
