Lynne Cox
Oct. 30, 1943 – Jan. 18,2025
Carol Lynne Cox, 81, of Bennettsville, S.C., died from health complications related to dementia on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2025, surrounded by the love of her children as the sun broke out on a rainy day.
Lynne was born Oct. 30, 1943, in New Jersey. She was the daughter of Charles and Virginia Vogel. They lived in Michigan for a short time before her father settled the family, which also included Lynne’s younger sister, Joey, in Villanova, Pa. Life for her family revolved around the Philadelphia Country Club, where Lynne and Joey were members of the swim team. She excelled in freestyle and backstroke and said no one could beat her at backstroke. Lynne graduated from Bucknell University in 1965 with a bachelor’s degree in biology. While at Bucknell, she was a member of the synchronized swimming team, and she met an interesting guy named Tom Cox. They went to a Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity party together, and Tom’s fraternity brothers challenged him to kiss the very chaste Lynne Vogel. He did by the end of the night. They married on Jan. 20,1968, while he was a student at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine.
In 1976, Lynne and Tom moved to Bennettsville, S.C., where Tom opened Marlboro Animal Hospital on Beauty Spot Road. Lynne took care of their three children, Colby, Kern and Wylie, teaching them to swim, throw a football, climb a tree and ride a horse. They often read books together at the end of the day sitting in a sunny spot on the front porch with music playing on the record player. Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings were her favorites (but there were many others to come). While Lynne dearly loved her three children, she said the “greatest thing that ever happened to her” was finding
Ferdinand and raising him. Ferdinand was a Black Angus bull that she found as a calf on the side of the road while driving to Camp Pee Dee to swim laps at the pool. She put him in her yellow Volkswagen Squareback and brought him home. She named him Ferdinand, bottle fed him and took him for walks with her German shepherd, Trudeau. Dementia never robbed her of his memory. She loved to tell the story of Ferdinand to anyone she met. And 10 minutes later, she would tell them the story again.
Lynne worked for a short time in the 1980s with the boll weevil eradication program in Marlboro County. She enjoyed walking the cotton fields and setting out the green traps, despite developing terrible rashes on her arms and legs from the cotton plants.
Lynne eventually moved back to Pennsylvania to be closer to her family after she and Tom divorced. She found a job working as a lab technician at Johnson Matthey, a specialty metals company. She was very proud of the work she did in the company’s gold lab matching product colors. She retired in her early 60s and then began working on a local farm named Sugartown Strawberries. She loved the hard, sweaty, dirty work of picking and planting, and she made a lifelong friend with the owner of the farm, Robert “Bob” Lange.
“Mommy,” as she was referred to by her three children, instilled in them a love of being outdoors and exercising. There was no reason to be inside if there was still daylight, according to Lynne. Later in life, Lynne would say she hated exercise, but up until May 2020, she walked two to three hours a day. She was quick to tell you that she had always been a runner, but her doctor advised her sometime in her 50s to quit running due to an old knee injury.
In 2016, Lynne’s children decided it was their turn to take care of their mother. For a couple of years, she went back and forth between her daughters’ homes in Pennsylvania and South Carolina, each sharing in the adventure of caring for Lynne. She got to enjoy beach trips, going to the Kentucky Derby, the Philadelphia Zoo, golfing, riding horses, acquiring cats (lots of cats), and riding out two hurricanes and no electricity for days. Lynne found humor in every situation. Eventually, it was easier on Lynne to remain in South Carolina. Ironically, she was now living out her final years at her home on Beauty Spot Road in South Carolina with all three of her children providing care for her in various ways. She also looked forward to calls every Wednesday from her sister, Joey. Colby, Kern and Wylie found ways to adapt to every new stage in the journey, finding joy and laughter in the simple moments with Mommy, who also continuously made the best of all situations. Dementia may have robbed Lynne of many memories, but never her sense of humor. Regardless of the challenges, Lynne’s children will look back on these years as happy times with their “Sweet Little Mother.” Lynne was also blessed to have a team of angels who took very good care of her when the dementia began to take its toll. She was loved by many for her wit, her laughter, her strength and her beauty. The family will always be thankful to these ladies who came in and helped Lynne continue to have a great life.
Lynne was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Virgina Vogel, and her ex-husband, Tom Cox. She is survived by her three children, Colby (Kevin) Miller, Kern Cox, and Wylie (Leighton) Bell; her sister, Joey (Denny) Bement; four grandchildren, Ethan Cox, Cade Cox, Kevin Miller Jr. and Carly Miller; nephew Ned (Angie) Bement; and niece Collyn (Jeff) Gilbert. Lynne never forgot her three children, her two special sons-in-law and of course, Ferdinand.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, March 29, at 10 a.m. at Cheraw First Baptist Church in Cheraw, S.C. The family will receive friends at their house on 615 Beauty Spot Road W., Bennettsville, after the service.
Due to Lynne’s love of animals, donations may be made to the Humane Society of Marlboro County in her memory. Published in THE LINK (Cheraw, SC), page 14, January 29, 2025.

The family will greet friends from 1:00 – 2:00 PM Sunday, prior to the service at the funeral home.
Annie’s remarkable journey began on September 4, 1928, in the heart of Chesterfield, where she was born into a vibrant family of nine children on a modest farm just a stone’s throw from the North/South Carolina border. Annie was the middle child of Ben Tillman and Mattie Hunter Adams. From her earliest days, she embodied resilience and tenacity, qualities forged from the Great Depression. Together, her family labored from dawn until dusk, with an unbreakable bond and collective strength that helped them navigate the trials of life.
In 1946, she met Bill, a young soldier just home from the war, and they quickly fell in love, embarking on a beautiful journey together. Moving to Thomasville, NC, she embraced her role as a devoted wife to a truck driver, tackling the challenges of nurturing five spirited children while coping with her partner’s life on the road and the long separations. With grace and resilience, she turned obstacles into cherished memories, her unwavering dedication to her family. Her children admired her strength, learning invaluable lessons in love and perseverance—a true legacy. In the early sixties, they returned to Chesterfield, continuing to raise their children. Annie found joy in the outdoors, tending to her flowers and garden, nurturing not only her plants but also the spirit of her family.
Annie’s twelve-layer chocolate cakes became famous, filling the hearts and tummies of her grandchildren and delighting the neighborhood kids, who affectionately called her Aunt Annie. Holidays at her home were a magnet for family and friends alike, and her welcoming nature created a warm haven for all who entered.
Along with her parents, Annie was preceded in death by her beloved husband of sixty-three years, William J. (Bill) Lang, her cherished son, Gary W. Lang, her daughter Melinda Woodward, and her infant grandson, Stephen
Sellers. She joyfully reunites with her treasured siblings: James, Clyde, Bernice, John D., Dorothy, Shirley, and Gennie.
She continues to shine brightly through those she leaves behind—her children, Bonnie (Jackie) Rivers, Barbara (Donny) Sellers, and Debria (Andy) Carpenter of Chesterfield; her daughter-in-heart, Linda Lang of Summerville; son-in-heart, John Woodward of Ruby; her dear sister, Carlene Stroud of Kershaw and sister-in-law, Phyllis Adams of Concord. Annie’s legacy flourishes in her grandchildren: Andy (Becky) Woodward, Rhonda (Chris) Mackey of Sanford, Chris (Anna) Sellers of Florence, Tracey (Curtis) Waldron of Mocks Corner, Adam Lang of Summerville, Barry (Pam) Adams, Brent Adams, Charlene (Kojak) White, Christy (Greg) Oliver, and Amanda Coxe, all sharing the love and warmth she instilled in them. Her great- grandchildren carry on that spirit, including Rebecca (Dr. Brent) Fisher of Asheville, Austin Adams of Society Hill, Bailey Adams of Charleston, Courtney (Jonathan) Payares of Durham, Hunter Woodward US Army Fort Bragg, Conner (Patrick) Hinzman, Jacob Verrett, Lily Mackey and Wyatt Mackey of Sanford, Ben Mize of Mocks Corner, Cody (Megan) Sellers, Patrick (Kaitlin) Roscoe and Emory Roscoe of Cheraw, Baron (Courtney) Adams, Charli Gaskins, Justin Gaskins, Annie, Clayton, Jase, Ava and Emma Roscoe of Chesterfield, each a thread in the rich tapestry of her legacy.
Annie’s family extends further into great-great-grand- children, including Alexander, Lilly, and Oliver Sellers, along with Eliza, Sullivan, Quinn Fisher, Tripp, Haze and Brynnlee Adams, and Luca Gaskins.
She cherished her sisters of the heart: Louise Brock, Cindy-Lou Cerrone, Barbara Lisenby, and her long-time neighbor Sylvia Hancock, alongside her brother of the heart, Hardy Sellers. Annie’s life was a testament to love, resilience, and an unyielding spirit—a legacy that will never fade.

Nan Myers Bradham
CHERAW – South Carolina native Nan Myers Bradham, 83, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on March 1, 2025.
Nan was born on August 11, 1941, in Sumter, SC, to the late Marion and Nell Dunbar Myers. A voracious reader and studious pupil from a young age, she parlayed her passion for literature into a career as an English teacher. In her final semester at Winthrop University, a recruiter from Orangeburg Public Schools persuaded Nan that if she joined his middle school faculty, she’d find her future husband currently teaching in the Math department. Less concerned about marriage and more about introducing the works of her favorite authors like Thomas Wolfe to the next generation of students, she enthusiastically accepted the available position, but she ended up falling in love with the Math teacher down the hall all the same. On February 6, 1965, she married Joe Thomas Bradham, Jr. with whom she shared a loving and joyful life for over 50 years. Their careers in education took them to Orangeburg, SC; Boone, NC; and then eventually Cheraw, SC, where they raised their three children and retired.
A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Nan cherished time spent with family and friends. Known for her compassionate nature, she had an innate ability to listen and comfort those who sought her guidance. She valued the art of letter writing and expressed her thoughts through heartfelt notes of appreciation. A woman of impeccable character, Nan was steadfast in her principles and committed to doing the right thing. A member of Cheraw First Baptist Church, she taught Sunday School and was an active member of the Victory Sunday School Class.
With a lively spirit known for her delightful sense of humor, she often brought joy and laughter to gatherings. She enjoyed opening up her home to friends for Book Club and Bridge, socializing at neighborhood dinner parties, and dancing the occasional Shag. She appreciated the beauty in nature, admiring the splendor of fall foliage on a drive with Joe and the kids, or relishing in the delight of a new bloom in her garden in Spring.
And as a true Southern belle, Nan was never seen in public without her signature red lipstick.
In addition to her parents, Nan was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joe Thomas Bradham, Jr., and her brother, Judge Marion Myers.
She is survived by her sons, Joseph Thomas Bradham, III and his husband, Charles Gainey of Florence, SC, and Nicholas Myers Bradham and his husband, Brett England, of New York, NY; her daughter, Laura Bradham Clark and her partner, Chris Hall, of Gastonia, NC; her cherished grandchildren, Reis Clark, Avery Clark, and Huck Bradham-England; and her sisters-in-law, Phyllis Causey of Conway, SC, and Barbara Jean Bradham of Charleston, SC.

Betty T. Thrailkill
August 14, 1928 — March 20, 2025
CHERAW – Betty T. Thrailkill Our mother, Betty Thrailkill, was born on a tobacco farm in Coward, SC on August 14, 1928, the last of seven children of Alford and Daisy Turner. She died at home in Cheraw on the morning of Thursday, March 20, 2025, aged 95, well cared for and in the full assurance of a simple, deep Christian faith. On Tuesday night she startled all in her hospital room by announcing out of a sound sleep, “I’m going to heaven,” and then, “I’m going to bed.”
In later years as she struggled, she often awoke with a report, “I feel terrible,” to be followed by, “I think I’ll fix a meal for….”
Love and service were good medicine. Our thanks go to Dr. Novinger and staff, the team of nurses at McLeod Health-Cheraw, her caregivers (Catherine Hord, Mary McQuage, Sandy Watson, Meg Sprouse, Hope Castor, Dana Evans and Ashley Harper), her Sunday School class at First United Methodist Church, Dr. Michael Pavi of McLeod’s Hospital who rescued her from cancer four times in forty years, the Wound Center of Carolina Pines Well Home Health.
A family joke is that we knew neither her name nor birth date. She knew herself as Betty Jean but always wondered why she was not named after her mother, Daisy Jane. It seems that old Dr. Whitehead of Lake City, who went into Florence to register the births every few months, never filled out her birth certificate. It was only much later, when applying for a Passport, that we found that the census of 1930 listed her as Betty Jane. For simplicity, she opted to retain Betty Jean as her legal name. Her father twice signed official forms with the wrong birth date, but for the best of reasons! Another child was needed to justify a teacher in a multi-grade one room school in the Fall of 1934, so she started first grade when barely five. With just eleven grades at the school, she graduated at only fifteen. Another change of birth date allowed her entrance into the nursing program at McLeod’s Infirmary shortly after her next birthday. We think she was 95 at death, but the mystery remains!
Betty was twice orphaned, the first at fifteen months, when her mother’s gown was set ablaze by a log rolling out of the fireplace as she was holding our mother. Her father married “Miss Winnie” several years later, and she died in 1941 when Betty was 12. On Thursday morning when the gates opened, she was embraced by Daisy Jane, and the hole in her heart that had shaped all of her life was finally healed.
It was in June of ’51 that our father, Dr. Jim, who was working at McLeod’s the summer after his junior year at MUSC, stepped off an elevator and spied a lovely nurse with auburn hair walking down the hall with her back to him. He elbowed his buddy, “I’m going to ask her out.” He did, and three weeks later they were engaged. Married a year later June 14, they worked together for a year at McLeod’s, he an intern, she an obstetrical nurse.
Then it was on to Cheraw in June of ’53 to purchase a small medical practice from a doctor called back into the Navy during the Korean War. And for 47 years until his retirement in 1999 they were a medical tag-team, with her keeping him well-clothed and well-fed, filling in at the office, as he served his patients, the hospital, and made over 25,000 house calls. They had three boys (Phil in ’53, Tony in ’55, Chris in ’58) followed by a daughter, Betsy, in 1964.
As children it was our delight to find our parents dancing in the kitchen to Count Basie’s Satin Doll.
Her life became less medical because running the home, cooking gourmet meals, working with the Garden Club and Hospital Auxiliary, ferrying her four children, volunteering at the Health Clinic, working with Cub Scouts, playing bridge, throwing dinner parties, teaching Sunday School, and growing beautiful flowers consumed all her hours.
Our father was the face of the operation, but she was the highly valued back office and operations director. They were boyfriend and girlfriend all their days.
Marrying our father was a step up, and while already a skilled nurse in her own right, she knew little about decorating, landscaping, flower arranging, silver and fine china, and all the courtesies of a small town where the wives of professionals were expected to staff all manner of volunteer efforts. But she mastered them all.
Never was she happier than with a house full of family and friends to whom she could announce, “Dinner is served!” We’ve eaten more meals that look like photographs out of “Southern Living” than I can count. Hers was an American story and ours an American tale of love and service. I (Phil) served as a Methodist pastor for 47 years and now as a freshly ordained Anglican priest, writing books and teaching at seminaries in Africa.
Tony in the Navy and Chris in the Army have served their country bravely as Gulf War veterans. Tony is a gospel song writer, and his gift to mother was his song writing and singing. Chris could always make mother laugh and was a constant delight. Betsy is an entrepreneur. She delighted in creating adventures for Gram. This included Betty’s first helicopter ride at 92.
Medicine, ministry, international relations, and costly military service are her legacy through us. Her granddaughters Ellen, Katherine, Madelene, Iris, and extended granddaughter Mary Carter; her grandsons Daniel, Anthony, and Jackson; great-grandsons Michael and Raleigh, as well as her son-in-law Christian (Betsy) and daughter-in-law Lori (Phil) all share in her legacy of love and hospitality. As Proverbs 31:31 commands “Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates.”
A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, May 17 at 2:00 pm at First United Methodist Church. Memorials may be sent to First UMC or to St. David’s Anglican Church, both of Cheraw, or to Doctors Without Borders.
What an amazing, complex, wonderful woman, wife, and mother! Late in life with the advent of her “Gram cams” Betty became an Instagram influencer and garnered a local and international audience who loved with her southern ways and sense of style (they may be viewed at #gramcambetty). She is a forgiven believer, joined to the communion of the saints in glory, where she awaits the resurrection of the dead at the end of the age. She would like you to join her there at a larger table for which the best of this life is only an appetizer

Dorothy Jordan Burr
CHESTERFIELD — Dorothy Jordan Burr, affectionately known as “Dot” was a beloved sister, mother, grand- great-grand, great- great grandmother, and friend. She ‘loved this life she lived’ and was so grateful for the approximately 84 years (8/23/1941 – 7/27/2025) that God gave to her here on Earth. She realized, “How very special are we for just a moment to be part of life’s eternal rhyme.” And now, how very blessed is she to be in the presence of her Savior for all Eternity.

Retirement was not for her though as she then followed her true call/passion as a caregiver to individuals, within the community, whom she grew to love. All along, she remained dedicated and faithful to her family and was a strong support (providing constant care for her grandson, Joshua, of the home).
